Unhappy Yast didnt let me set user or any password

well now what to do re install the whole thing..

i finally managed to install SUSE 10.2 after loads of hickups.

using a Toshiba portege 3410CT with no network card and no internal CD-rom.
using a external targus cd-rom (PCMCIA).
    using a Freecom USB hadrddrive

after loong time i figured out that i could download the DVD iso image put it on to the USB harddrive. download CD1 iso image burn it on a CD then boot from the external cd-rom and then point to the dvd image on the frecom USB harddrive. it whent trough all the installs took a full day !! but now i have a promt

    Login:

and i was never asked to setup any password or user during Yast install
So question is there a default password it uses or shall i reinstall the whole thing from scratch..

Login as root. I am assuming that you were asked for Admin password during the install. If not, well we will get to that later. Now when you are logged in as root issue this command
    Code:
    # useradd bonscott -d /home/bon
    # passwd bonscott
Provide a password and repeat it for a confirmation. You are done.

If you are not able to login as root. Boot into single mode. To do so when you are at the GRUB bootloader press 'e' on the line saying SUSE 10.1 etc.... It will open a set of three lines select the one saying kernel and press 'e' again and it will open a line. Append the word 'single' without quotes in the end. Press enter then 'b'.

Now you will logged in as root (no password needed). Type the following
    Code:
    # passwd
Provide the new root password and confirm it. Repeat the steps I told before for adding a normal user. Reboot and enjoy.

    Fan control

    Hi thanks for info....

i manage to sort it out by starting from scratch and reinstall+format...
now i have a normal login both root and user password....
problem is it takes so enormous time... i figure out that if i prepped the harddisk with a Linux swap partition(using Partition magic i could answer yes to use swap disk when yast started whining about the 190Mb memory..
then it worked better to install.. but still it took days.....

one new problem: i think the fan is not running on the laptop??!! it gets quite hot and before when running XP on it i could hear/feel the fan????.
a bit scared to run in for any duration now.
maybe there is some general fan control packet out there somewhere i could install ?

and how can i mount and use the two partitioned harddrives "old from the XP install" data NTFS drives in SUSE ? i tested before when i had xp on it some live-linux dist and those could mount and use the NTFS partitions!

good thing i got my 3com wireless pc card to work with ease ...
now working on the bluetooth 3com card to work also but no luck so far..

i am a beginner on linux so i ts a bit tricky for me..

the toshiba portege 3410CT is a 400mhz pentiumIII with 190Mb memory and 40Gb harddrive (original was 6Gb) i have two NTFS partitions and one FAT32 on it plus those linux that SUSE made for it self.

the laptop came with windows 98, then i put XP on it, then did a dualboot with RedHat linux and XP, then i removed the Redhat used XP.
when i got myself a new laptop i decided to try to set up SUSE linux the old one.... = todays status
