nvidia driver problems
Hi everyone.
Please beware i am a huge n00b to linux but determined to get this working.
Suse is my third attempt at installing linux after ubuntu and fedora. I seem to be having the same problems with installing all systems on my laptop.
the 1st is the nvidia driver and the 2nd is the wireless card.
Before i get the wireless card problems sorted i need to login to suse. At the minute the login freezes and this i think is because of display driver problems. I have attempted to follow the directions given by bigtomrodney but it didn't seem to work....i have a hp pavillion dv6095ea with AMD Turion64x2 with nvidia GeForece 7200 go graphics card
please click on the link and have a look at the 2 pictures attached as they show the error that i received once i attempted the nvidia driver update.
Where do i go from here?

Hi!
Judging from the SuSE build date on the first screen, I'm guessing you have SUSE v10.0. Yes?
To make sure I understand correctly: You were able to install SUSE OK, and you were able to boot once. When you tried to install the proprietary Nvidia drivers, and rebooted, that's when you got these errors. When you installed the drivers, did you test the configuration before finishing?
I would try booting from the SUSE Install CD/DVD and try to repair the install. To do this, boot from the CD and choose Installation from the menu. At some point (I think it's after you agree to the license again in v10.0, but it will vary depending on your version) there will be an Install Type screen: Choose Repair. Let us know how that goes. Please take good notes, and tell us the specific language of any error messages.

First thing I suggest is to install the nvida drivers found at nvidia.com and follow their instructions. Be sure and read all the info there. That method has always worked for me (while others have not).
This is the link: here.
If that installation goes without any errors and you still have a problem, as root run sax2.
I'm assuming that prior to the nvidia installation your video was OK.
- 01-16-2007 #4Correct , I got it with the book i bought "Suse Linux 10 bible"

- 01-16-2007 #5I don't understand. First you said that you installed the nvidia driver per above sticky and you also say that you can not get to the login screen. This does not make sense.

Sorry but I'm confused about what you're trying to tell us.

So the install program comes up, you partition the drive, and set up your time zone. YaST installs the base system packages, and reboots and ... you get error messages instead of the login screen. YaST never identifies your graphics card, and you never specify a Root password and create a user. Are you keeping the DVD in the drive? That may help.

Please have a look at this video as this what i get everytime i attempt to login normally. I have never seen the gnome desktop since attempting to install suse.
the third picture here is a pic of what i see when i press esc key as it says "press esc for more information" and i thought it might be of some use to you...
The only way i can get to the command line is by selecting the "failsafe option" when logging in...
thanks for your patience!!!
