    Question software downloads

I downloaded a couple of tar.bz2 files and tried to move them from the desktop to the "/usr/local/src" folder, from where I planned to extract and install them. I got an error message that said I was not allow to write to this folder- (it is owned by 'root') Could someone tell me how to accomplish the task? I'm a noob and Linux challenged.

    hi cephalis !

you can gain 'root' privileges using 'su' command.
    in terminal/konsole, execute this
    Code:
    su -
    mv <tar_files> /usr/local/src
i would suggest you to create a folder in your home and extract files in it. its safe to extract/install in home folder instead of messing around in system folders after gaining 'root' privileges.

It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

    Thanks

Many thanks, I'll give it a try. I was trying to use "/usr/local/src" for this purpose because a forum guru advised it. You evidently think there is no pressing reason to do this.
