changing hostname
I wanted to change the hostname for my computer in opensuse 10.2 from the original default name linux-blah-blah or whatever it was already given. So I changed the name using yast -> network services -> hostname.
but when I use konsole, it still says mike@linux-blah-blah not the new name.
I checked the /ect/host file and it is changed there.
Messing around a little more I tried changing the host name in yast in the network devices going to network card, then choosing my network card and trying to edit the hostname and server and I get an error.
When I first try to go to Network Card I get two options for "Network Setup Method" First is "Usercontrol with Network Manager" and the second is "Traditional method with ifup" I tried doing this with both.
When I go to change the hostname and server it says
"The resolver configuration file (/etc/resolv.conf) has been temporarily modified by dhcpcd. You have two options:
Modify the current (changed) version of the file.
Press 'Accept' now and continue editing other (nonresolver) data. You could return to this dialog later when the above service has terminated. "
I tried both, but after I try to change the hostname and go to finish I get the error
"The search domain ' (my domain search name) ' is invalid.
A valid domain name consists of components separated by dots. Each component contains letters digits, and hyphens. A hyphen my not begin or end a component and the last component may not begin with a digit."
but my search domain name follows these guidelines and it was the one already entered in by the system, not me.
Any idea of what is wrong here and what I need to do to change my hostname?

false alarm.
sorry, I figured it out. for some reason the domain name in the domain search box had a period after the .net at the end so it looked like ".net." which was causing the problem.
I wonder why it was put in there like that, since I never typed it in myself.
