Why can I log in KDE only as root?

I have a strange problem. When I installed suse 10.2 I created only one user and everything worked ok. After a certain time I couldn't log in as user in KDE. So the only way to log in to KDE is as root which still works ok. If I use console I can log in with both(user and root). So I tried to make new user, but even with that I couldn't log in. It goes this way: I type in the user name and user password, then the screen becomes black and after a few seconds it returns to log in screen without saying anything. I also don't remember to have done anything special, the only change from the original installation was, that I connected an external us robotics 56k modem and it works ok. Can anyone help me with this?

    Only ROOT?

Depending on how far along you are, and if not very far into using Linux, consider re-installilng the OS only this time DO use a user name AS WELL AS Root.

I suggest the above as I've re-installed my system several times now and the first few times I was amazed at how much I missed or added which I didn't need.

    Hope this helps

Thanx for help, but reinstalling suse is not the option i would prefer. Can someone tell me how to fix this problem, and what actually causes this problem. I am not an expert in linux, but i am willing to learn. Thanx for help in advance.
