    Question (newbie) XGL/Compiz questions ...

    Hello!
    (newbie warning)

I think I must categorize myself as a newbie. I got linux, know the basic and knows how to navigate and do simple tasks. But I have not spend enough time in it to learn all the things with command lines, strange libraries needed each time I install software, etc.
I've been using linux partly for about half a year. I started out with suse 10.0, and later I upgraded to 10.1. At this point, or so, I discovered superkaramba, and since I liked the idea, I worked hard on it, and finally managed to get it installed and working. Then all was fine.
I started the new year by getting a nvidia graphic card, and with the new 10.2, I thought I just as well upgrade the os. And now, with the possibility of 3D, I enabled XGL with compiz (the stuff that came wit 10.2). I also wanted to get superkaramba again. But the source code I had couldn't compile because of some missing python libs/modules/headers/, so I found a rpm and installed it. It seemed to work, and I put some themes on my desktop.
But the next time I started the computer, they were gone. They closed down with the os.
I read on the internet, that I needed to change a line of source code, but that didn't help, cause i couldnt compile (and i tried to install all python libs and bindnings etc.).

Which leads me to my first question: How to get superkaramba on xgl?

    -------

I also wanted, with my new 3d desktop, to get some new plugins for xgl. I went on the internet and found some plugs i wanted, but then I discovered that I didn't know how to install them. I browsed google and linux sites for a long time, and finally figured i needed something called gcompizthemer or cgwd.

Question 2: How to get that?

    ---------

and finally: question 3: What is compiz and beryl? what is the difference? is it the same? what to choose?

I really hope to get some help here.
    Thanks in advantage

    Cool

Question 1: How to get superkaramba on xgl?
Are you running Gnome or KDE? I heard Superkaramba is a little weird right now with XGL and that it only shows up on one workspace. Keep that in mind.

Question 2: How to get that? (gcompizthemer or cgwd)
    http://rpmfind.net//linux/RPM/opensu...9-37.i586.html

RPMFind is your friend, just make sure you get the right package for the right distro. To install the RPM file goto command prompt and type-

    Code:
    rpm -Uvh cgwd-0.69-37.i586.rpm
That RPM is for i586 systems, if you have a system that supports 64bit or PPC, there are alternative versions to download.

Question 3: What is compiz and beryl? what is the difference? is it the same? what to choose?
I'm not too sure. I *think* compiz is more of a window manager that uses the OpenGL. Beryl seems to do the same thing. I guess it's just preference. Check out themes for each and see if you like them.

I'm no Linux master by any means, so if I said something misleading or invalid hopefully someone will correct me.
    I praise Webmin and PuTTy!

    Thanks.

    Thanks for you reply, Harner.

I am using KDE, and I have read about the karamba issues, you mentioned, but with me, the themes just don't start up, when I boot.

I have downloaded the cdwg-package, and I'm goona try it now. anyway, I think I'm going to continue using compiz, now I finally got it working.

    Thanks,
    Faffnir
