    Suse 10.2 deskop error

    Hi,

I just installed suse linux 10.2 and at first my screen resolution was set at 800x600 and then when i tried to change it to 1280x1024 it printed a white stripe across my desktop and there are a few centimeters of stuff left outside the screen. I'm really confused because even though i changed all settings back the way they were i still can't get the white stripe away nor get the whole desktop to fit into the screen.

So, if someone could help me restore the settings i would be very greatful but if someone also could tell me how to set the screen resolution to 1280x1024 or even 1024x768 and to get it to work properly it would be great.

    Thank you

    Hey Edward !

Try changing the configuration by loggin into $prompt . (ctrl+alt+F1)...

    cd /etc/X11/

ideally u shuld see a file named xorg.conf ... or else check for XF86config file ..

vi <config_file> ... inside this file u'll find a section "Screen" ... edit the "modes" .. ie delete all the resolution shown more than 1024x768 .. and keep settings like shown below...
    Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" ...
save the file.. nd reboot ur system..

most probably it might solve ur prob !!

    Regards,
    Lucky !

It's good practice to always save any configuration file before making changes. You do this from the command line with the cp command. E.g. cp file file.bak.

As root run xorgconfig. This will enable you to rebuild your xorg.config file but you will need to know the specs on your monitor, i.e. the vert and horz settings.

You can also edit the xorg.conf file again.

When you are done, as root run sax2 to test your X settings.

    Desktop error

I didn't get it to work by changing the xorg.config file but I got it somehow to work by editing the options in sax2. I don't know why but I sort of noticed a pattern in it's behavior and then set the screen size to 20 inches instead of the 14 it actually is. This worked and the the screen was totally normal but after I booted the next morning it was the way it was before again . But thanks for all your advice it has really helped me understand things. I think I'll just have to keep on trying.
