    First time install SuSE10.1

    Hello,

I am trying to install SusE10.1 for the first time in my laptop. I have 3 partitions.

    1. Primary, NTFS, Win XP Media Centre
    2. Primary, Fat32 for SuSE Linux (to be installed)
    3. Logical, for Data

I have totally 5 CDs which i downloaded from http://www.distromania.com/distro_info.php?distro=476. Please suggest me how to proceed now. I have no idea of installing multiple OS before.

    Thanks in advance!

    hello rajuvegesna !

    Welcome to the LinuxForums.

install SuSe in Logical Partition. download GParted LiveCD and burn image to disk and boot from it. delete Primary Partition and re-size Extended Partition. leave unpartitioned/free space for SuSe. 8-10GB minimum.
you can delete/create/resize partitions during SuSe installation too but i prefer GParted only. its lot easier to create free space before installation. Manual Partition is bit confusing for new users.
start SuSe installation and select 'unpartitioned/free space for install' in Partition Section. Dual Boot is default and dont change anything in Boot Loader section. SuSe will install GRUB Boot Loader and you will have choice to boot up Windows or SuSe at startup.

    Good Luck !

    First time install SuSE10.1

    Hello devils,

Thank you for immediate reply. I need 3 partitions because i want to use data partition for both linux and windows, where i have my data files. Why can't i install linux on Fat 32 which is primary. I think we need primary partition for linux to boot up. I am using Acronis software for managing partitions.
I have 20 GB free space for Fat 32 which is primary. Is this would me fine.
    How to proceed now!

    Thank you in advance.

Why can't i install linux on Fat 32 which is primary.
SuSe's default FileSystem is 'reiserfs' and you should install it in its default FileSystem Or in ext3. i dont think its possible to install SuSe in FAT32.

unlike Windows, Linux doesn't care about partition tag. you can install it in Logical too.
I am using Acronis software for managing partitions.
you can use any partition Manager but i would suggest you not to format partitions manually. let installer do its job.

    1. Primary XP
    2. Extended
-----1 Logical FAT32 for data sharing
------ <free space> for SuSe in Extended Partition.

First Partition, Primary, NTFS, for XP
    Second Extended Partition
...... Logical Partition in Extended Partition, FAT32, for data sharing.
...... Leave free space for SuSe.

i am suggesting you that partition structure.

yes. you have one Logical partition already. it means Extended Partition exists.
if your Partition Manager supports resizing Extended Partition then delete 2nd Primary Partition and resize Extended (merge deleted space in Extended) else use GParted.

Well i will download GParted to avoid confusions. If i delete 2nd Primary Partition and resize Extended will the data in logical partition will be deleted.

Please type the steps that i have to do using GParted.

    Thank you very much!

No. your data is safe but be careful. delete Second Partition only and drag Extended Partition's Handle.
