What type of music file/stream are you trying to play?

The first time you start Banshee you should get a "License Agreement"-page that you must accept (by pressing "OK") to be able to play MP3-files, but you can still play OGG-files if you don't. (for example from Wikipedia)

So you should try to play an ogg-file and if it works you probably just need to find the "License Agreement"-page again and press "OK" instead of "Cancel". If this does not work you will need to tell us what sound-card you have and more such info.

Here is a good place to start

Hacking openSUSE 10.2 - Software in Review

what you need is the win32 codec

mp3 is not a free codec there are patents on it so it is not distributed by default.
