    Question (newbie) beryl problem

    Hello, linux-users out there.
I have installed suse 10.2 and have been trying out the xgl stuff (i just recently got a 3d-grapics card). I first just installed the compiz, that came with 10.2, and it worked ok. (i'm using kde by the way).
But soon I got a little annoyed by the window decoration, and tried to change it, but I couldn't (neither kde or gnome control center).
I therefore installed beryl, hoping it would do better.

It went fine, I was using the opensuse beryl-wiki guide, and it installed as it should. But when I started beryl, I got the white cube. I did the suggested solution (here) and when I started beryl it worked.

But (and here is the problem) when I start kde, the shell script is not starting beryl-manager, but kwrite with the file open. so each time i start up, i have to alt+F4 the kwrite, open konsole, and type
    Code:
    beryl-manager
Then the windows get decos, and things works like they should.
But is there anyway to get rid of this?

(oh yes, and can I get superkaramba working with xgl/beryl?)

    thanks in advantage,
    Faffnir

The problem is most likely that the file is not set as executable so KDE thinks it's a text file and therefor (correctly) opens it in Kwrite.

To make the file executable simply open a terminal and type
    Code:
    chmod +x ~/.kde/Autostart/<filename>
where <filename> is the file you are trying to execute.

Superkaramba works fine on my KDE + Beryl.

    hope it helps

    Thanks for your reply, zba78

I found the file, clicked properties, checked it as executable, and it works now.

    thanks!

But my superkaramba themes don't appear on startup, although the karamba icon is in the system area.

    But thanks,

    Beryl.

    hello Manshahia.

Beryl is a fork of compiz (the generator of xgl/aiglx 3d graphics).
It has good and bad sites: on the good site, it can do more than compiz (e.g. transparant cube) and is developing quicker. On the bad site, it is not as stable as compiz (it crashes more easy, and may not start up properly).
Beryl is more impressive to look at in general, and I have chosen this one (the stability is not a big problem). You can try both, and see what you like the most. opensuse.org has got some good wikis, that will help.

    Have a lot of fun,
    Faffnir
