no encombered code is distributed with Suse. MP3 has patents.

Yes, they can't play MP3-encoded music because the code necessary to decode the MP3s is proprietary, and most free (no cost) distributions either cannot afford or refuse to pay for the proper licenses they would need to buy in order to distribute that functionality with their OS.
The good news is you can get it to work. There are a few options, but to my knowledge the only legal one in the US is to download and install Fluendo. If you're not in the US (or just don't care) you can just download the latest version of XMMS from their website XMMS.org and it will have the MP3 codec in it already.Registered Linux user #270181

Helix-Banshee (GNOME based) should play mp3's out of the box...Depending you which version of SUSE you are running.
If you google for "amarok-helix suse" rmp find should give you amarok-helix and amarok-helix-backend. Both installed will play mp3's on SLED10.

I have only just installed SuSe 10.2 which has Helix Banshee and it plays all my MP3 files without any problem.
