Welcome to the Linux Forums.
you have to install necessary codecs to play DVD and VCDs, check here for instructions.
CasperIt is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

dvd failure to play
hey! I also have a DVD player and it can't come on. The power supply circuit is okey and the lens is also okay. Isuspect it is a problem with one of the functional ICs.
