Manual IP settings not working
Guys I've got a problem which has completely stumped me. I've got 2 systems runing Suse Linux 10.1. One is on a virtual box and the other one is on a stand-alone server. My problem is that I can access Internet etc.. when Network card settings are configured for DHCP but as soon as I change them to manual nothing works. Even though I can ping PCs from the Suse machines. I'm sure its something that I'm doing wrong but I don't know what.
That's how I'm making the changes
1. Open up Yast
2. Network Devices and then Network card
3. I opt for Traditional Method with ifup and then next
4. I've got only one network card so its already selected on both and then i just click on Edit button.
5. I select Static Address Setup radio button then type in the IP address 10.x.x.x and the Subnect Mask 255.255.248.0 then in Routing I type in the IP address of the router.
6. Then I click on Next and wait till Suse finishes whatever its doing.
Then when I open up Firefox it just says no page found.
Please help

Can you ping any ip on the internet? Maybe you have not set your dns settings?

There is one step missing in your list: 'Configure hostname and nameserver'. Add a Nameserver and then you should get
gateway:~ # nslookup www.suse.de
...
Non-authoritative answer:
www.suse.de canonical name = turing.suse.de.
Name: turing.suse.de
Address: 195.135.220.3
and successfully use FF."Really, I'm not out to destroy Microsoft. That will just be a completely unintentional side effect." Linus Benedict Torvalds

Actually I only rephrased rong's answer
