    how to increase screen resolution?

I've just installed Suse 10.2 . Yast gives me the choice of up to 600 800 but my monitor can give more in windows xp.

How do I increase the screen resolution. I am completely new to Linux and would appreciate step by step instructions suitable for an idiot.

    Thanks

If you post again it would be helpful to know what your graphics card and monitor specs are. In the mean try this:
Go to Command Line (e.g.Ctrl-Alt-F2 from your window manager) and login as root and type the command sax2. That normally resolves the issue.

    thank you for your reply

I tried using the ctrl alt F3 but was unable to log on.
I them tried the GUI menu and could lot on as root with my root password, which did not work for some reason when I tried ctrl alt F3.
I then found the right place to change the resolution. There was a list of monitors that did not include mine (digimate) so I told it I had video 7, which has worked anyway after I changed the resolution.
I must say that I've had to be quite persistent to get this done and wonder whether most windows users would be bothered.
    Best wishes,

    my monitor is not listed

It is a Digimate with a maximum resolution of 1280 1024 60hz and my graphics card is Intel 82845/G/GL/GE/PE/GU.

I can't find exactly the right setting by selecting other monitors : is there any way to solve this problem?
