Installed SUSE 10.2 onto WD MyBook USB External, GRUB Error 17, and other errors

I'm a Linux newbie, but I have installed Mepis 6.0 before, and i never was able to boot to Mepis due to kernel panic. Now, by suggestion of a friend running SUSE 10.1, I have installed SUSE 10.2 onto my USB external hard drive, a WD MyBook, 250G. When I try to boot from my root, internal drive everything seems fine until this proccess:

sd 2:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg0 type 0...................not found -- exiting to /bin/sh

sh: no job control in this shell
    $

I have tried to then run certain commands from this shell:

    /etc/fstab
    /boot/grub.menu.lst
    /etc/grub

    All read as invalid commands.

When I try to boot directly from my external, I recieve this message:

    GRUB version 1.5..
    Grub loading....
    Error 17

and nothing else happens. I cannot type any commands, and nothing else happens.

When I installed SuSE I had to use brokenmodule for ieee1394 devices

The reason I don't install SUSE onto my 40G internal is that I have Windows XP Home installed, and I am not able to partition that drive. I would greatly appreciate any and all advice and help.

    Thanks

    hi asaharyev !

does your machine's BIOS support boot up from External Drive? is Windows booting up on unplugging External DIsk?

its very easy to resize/shrink windows partitions using GParted LiveCD. its one of the best Partition Manager.

It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

I tried the exact same thing. Trying to install SUSE 10.2 on my WD MyBook 250 G. It won't work because Windows, when you first turn on your computer, doesn't yet recognize any USB ports. Now when you get that GRUB error 17 or 21 or 22. I have press ctrl+alt+del a number of times and finally it would boot to linux but what i did when i was finally able to get back to windows, I partitioned my C: for 7GB to install Linux. All you really need is 2.21 GB but just to be safe I did 7. Try Partition Magic.
