Exclamation .MOV solved, .RMVB still a problem. Another issue about Scanners (sane & HPLIP)

Hi all, I'm new to openSUSE 10.2.

I always watch different types of movie clips on my PC so I'm looking for a comprehensive codec pack like ffdshow. But I know there's no one single pack of such thing that can do all the jobs. Thus I've set up the Packman repo and downloaded "libxine1" and "w32codec".

After that I am able to play avi and mpeg clips, but not RMVB and MOV. Thus I did some research and found that I need the realplayer9 codecs, so I downloaded the rp9codecs-20050115.tar.bz2 file from mplayer's website and placed them all in /usr/local/lib/codecs. And pointed to that directory in the decoder section of Kaffeine's "xine parameters" setting. However, still no go. Can anyone please give me some advice on this?

Another issue would be MOV files (quicktime), which codec will I need? Where should I place them and what should I do with Kaffeine to get them played? Thanks!

(Oh, one last question, just wanna ask... Usually, where should we install our programs to? In Windows, I know it's Program Files of C:\, what about for Linux? Is it /usr/lib? Thanks a lot!^^

    Have a nice day,
    Leo

You should install both programs and codecs through Yast or other installer software like smart. Simply coping files to a directory may not be enough since there may be required changes to certain config files.

/usr/bin and /etc are the most commen places for user programs but other files associated with the app may need to be other places. This is dependendent upon the app. It is best to allow Yast to handle this.

I see.. so in conclusion, it is best to do everything through YaST, if possible. Thanks.

But could you please tell me which repository should I add in order to get the codecs for rmvb and mov files? What are the names of the codecs?

Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

got .mov files working now. Realized that I picked the wrong library (libxine1) before, I should have picked (xine_lib).

However, rmvb is still not working. Even tried copying all the codecs extracted from the rp9codecs-20050115 file to the /usr/lib/win32 directory, but still no go.

Another question about scanner.. My all-in-one printer is a HP Officejet 5500. Installed latest sane and HPLIP drivers. But when I launch xsane, it says "failed to oepn device: ..." Searched through lots of sites about this problem and it still seems to be a mystery. Below are the logs I got when I try to trigger the scan, the issue seems to stem from some I/O, data transmission stuff, which is not controllable on computers. Any advice would help.

    Code:

    Talking

    HURRAY!

Configured my scanner again in YAST > Hardware > Scanner by choosing the correct piece of driver (hpaio), pressed the on/off switch on the printer, and now I'm able to use my scanner. Strange.....

    But .RMVB issue remains unsolved...
Any other workarounds would be helpful too.

    Thanks a lot!
