how to update the system from shell

hello,
recently i shifted from ubuntu to suse.and here i m unable to use some commands.as
[LIST][*]apt-cache search[*]gcc
and so i m unable to compile my c programs.plz tell me how to give such commands in suse.
also i m unable to use any sound player.how to install vlc?

First wich distribution you are using.
and also there is a page that explain very well how to update:

and this can be done using YaST.
