Thumbs down Driver Problem ASUS NVIDIA en7950gt

I posted this in the NVIDIA discussion thread, but realized that it might be better on it's own.

    Hi,
I have recently bought new hardware in the hope of changing to linux and doing my video editing there instead of windows. I have never used linux before and is now having problems with my driver install.

I have tried to get this right for more than 4 hours now, and it is really getting on my nerves. I'm rethinking the whole thing about linux now one more time. But I think I must be missing something because all my friends says that linux is just as easy as windows.

I have openSUSE 10.2 installed and my graphic card is ASUS NVIDIA EN7950GT

I just think i have been through a lot of non graphical tweaking now and nothing happens.

I don't get any error messages but it still shows up as unknown driver in sysinfo, and my scrolling is horrible.

these are the things I have tried at least twice. Any other resources where i possible can find help?

http://www.suse.de/~sndirsch/nvidia-installer-HOWTO.html#1 where I tried both the easy version and the hard version

If you need any further information please let me know

    Thanks

I always go straight to nividia.com and use there installation methods and they have always worked for me. Check here for their howto or start from this link.

I think your friends are displaying a bit of bravado when they say linux is as easy as windows. Linux is quite different than windows and it takes time, patience and enthusiasm to get to know your way around it. Stick with it and I think eventually you'll agree it is worth the effort if you like being in control of your system.

Thank you very much for your reply,
As stated in my post that's ecxactly what i have done, I probably didn't specify it clearly enough, but the link you gave me was the same as I mentioned in my post .

I have tried variuos methods already for installing the drivers, but I doesn't seem to work.

I also tried to go to ASUS website where i type in my details about my graphic card. putting in:

    Product: Graphic Card
    Series: NVIDIDA SERIES
    Models: EN7950 Series

And it doesn't list any drivers for Linux?

I used the hard way with an Asus graphics card using the first link you gave and it worked fine. For some unknown reason the "easy" way did not.
Just a shot in the dark and this may be totally irrelevant but you can get software conflicts if Enterprise Software Management is loaded together with openSUSE Software Management when you are using KDE.
Enter YaST. Software > Software Management > Filter > Patterns > Base Technologies.
If the ESM box is ticked then untick it and click on Accept. The removal of ESM does not cause any other software problems elsewhere.

Following up my previous message it would appear, as you suggested, that Asus only has Windows drivers available for this card.

Thank you very much, I will try that next time I'm in Linux and let you know if it worked!

EDIT: just saw your second message, do you think if asus would maybe in the future release drivers for Linux. Otherwise I have made an enormous cock-up buying that card. It wasn't the cheapest I could find either

I think I have some good news for you.
Somebody else has exactly the same problem (not unusual in the wacky world of Linux) and it appears that a solution has been found.

    Look here:

Do note that the other person is using the 64 bit version so double check the instructions if you are using the 32 bit version.
    Good luck.

Thank you that took me some way...

I though got a message when trying to run the sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia command saying:
xc: Sorry could not start the configuration server

xc: for details refer to the log file:

    /var/log/Sax.log

    xc: abort...
I will try and post the same message on the other forum as well to see if they can help me as well
