    Im new to this and unfortunately when I try to open any of my desktop icons the gimp opens. What program should I choose to open with my icons?

    The program depends on the type of the data file. For text files you might use kedit or someother text editor.

    What type of files are you trying to open?

    Sounds like the associations are messed up. Like in Windows this is 'somewhat' based upon extensions. In KDE

    go to

    Personal settings- KDE components-File Associations.

    There you change the application associated with any type of file.
