OpenSuse Linux 10.1 help
Hi,
I am new to Linux and would like to install OpenSuse 10.1 on my system. I have the following questions :
1) Ive seen that OpenSuse 10.2 has released and its minimum RAM requirement is 256 MB . However, for some reasons I am unable to get a copy of OpenSuse 10.2 and hence would like to install OpenSuse 10.1 . I have 128 MB of RAM and 700 MHz processor and can allot a max of 6 GB to Linux . I intend to create a dual boot system .So,is my system configuration sufficient to run OpenSuse 10.1 ? .
2) Since, I am new to Linux I would like to know that since OpenSuse 10.2 has released will there be enough support available for version 10.1 ?
3) I am a student and I would like to use Linux mainly for exploring a new OS,also doing some development work , playing games, listening to music, watching videos etc. Initially I would be using Linux as an alternative OS but once I get comfortable I plan to switch over to Linux entirely. So,from a long term perspective if all I have is Linux on my machine then is OpenSuse 10.1 good enough as a complete computing environment or should I use Fedora Core 6 or some other distro ?
Thanks a lot
- 02-16-2007 #2No. you should try some light weight distro. check this thread.1) is my system configuration sufficient to run OpenSuse 10.1 ?
yes. a lot of people are still using 10.1.2) Since, I am new to Linux I would like to know that since OpenSuse 10.2 has released will there be enough support available for version 10.1 ?
Both distros comes with a lot of packages pre-installed. check the link i posted earlier.if all I have is Linux on my machine then is OpenSuse 10.1 good enough as a complete computing environment or should I use Fedora Core 6 or some other distro ?

@casper
Hi casper,
Thanks for the reply
. As u said that my system configuration is not sufficient for running OpenSuse 10.1 , so exactly where does my system fall short of the required resources ?. Is it that the harddrive space of 6 GB would be too less , or is it that OpenSuse 10.1 would need more RAM than 128 MB ?
I have already tried some lightweight distros like Knoppix and Ubuntu Live CD's but would now like to move on to a more full fledged Linux distro.

its less RAM only. there wont be any problem in installation but SuSe 10.1 will be very slow on that much RAM.
Ubuntu is also a full fledged distro. it has 15000+ packages. you have to install those through Synaptic.

10.1......
typ abt 4GB needed for 10.1, leaves u just 2GB to play with-not much! 700MHz a bit slow, partic if Celeron/similar. RAM much too little, you'll wear your hard disk a lot if u try & it WILL be slow. DVD playback for 10.1 is covered many times here-it's not there by default in at least later Suse's. there are other distros, I don't know if you could try the new "Sugar"-it may be too cut-down for a "real" machine. video ram needs to be reasonable too, say 128MB? I hope you have a programming background, linux requires it to get/keep it updated and running! Not an amateur's environment.
2.6GHz Celeron, 1GB, 160GB, 128Mb SuSe11.2; PCTV, GBit eth0 on P4PE, 10/100 eth1 <Ride to ride again>.
