Is there any text on the black screen or is it completely blank?
If the former - type exit and then log-in as root. Then type:-
sax2
and accept the defaults. This should get you back your screen (init 5).
If the latter then press (together) ctrl alt and backspace and follow the steps as above

Do you have 3D acceleration drivers installed from your Video card manufacturer? It is mentioned in the guide but it is not very understandable to a newbe on why the might need that.

If you need to get XGL/Compiz going, you will need the nVidia driver. Instructions for how to do this are here. Follow the steps in easy way. However, to do this you need to be able to log in and use the system.
