I recommend you take a look at this URL for SuSE-10.1.
    http://opensuse-community.org/Restricted_Formats/10.1

Note that a common method to get superior multimedia capabilities with openSUSE is to install the Packman packaged rpm version of xine, instead of the Novell/SuSE packaged version (where the Novell/SuSE version has been deliberately built in a limited manner).

You should also install w32codec-all rpm, from the packman site. Then on your openSUSE you can select the xine engine in your Novell/SuSE packaged Amarok. Your kaffeine will also function better. Also pay attention to the need to install libdvdcss2 (for encrypted DVD playback).

If you wish more flexible multimedia on your openSUSE, then I recommend you also install the packman packaged rpm for mplayer and the packman packaged rpm for ffmpeg.

In the URL I noted above, please pay close attention to what it states about installing relevant package sources:

Edit: It is not clear to me as to how new you are to Linux. Hence I have been working on a top level concept page for SuSE Linux newbies (but who have some reasonable computer experience) here:
    http://en.opensuse.org/Concepts
The page is still very preliminary, and it still needs improvement, but I hope it helps.

Thanks! I hope to improve it with time, and of course being a wiki, other inputs are helpful.

The idea is not to go into too much detail, but rather stay at a conceptual stage, with links to areas where more detail can be provided. I didn't succeed totally with that conceptual effort, but that is the idea. I still have some grammer that I need to fixed in the write-up.

I also tried to make it (and its wiki links) forum independant, such that it can be linked from any forum, without running afoul of any forum policies (by posting links to "competing" forums).
