No Gnome any more
For some reason when i attempted to log into my suse partition today after not logging in for a week it will not let me into gnome.
It seems to fail and just give me a command line.
i tried to do a repair with my cd's and it states that i have missing or corrupt packages pam, smtp_daemon and sysvinit. I have attempted to repair these but it continues to fail no matter how many times i attempt to repair them or whether i repair them through the automatic or the expert tools option.
please help...

What do you get when you type in startx? Can you run any commands from command line like ls, pwd, etc.
Do you recall if perhaps you shutdown the pc with the power swithch instead of proper shutdown?
You may very well have a corrupted system. Is your /home directory on a separate partition in case you have to reinstall the OS in which case you may be able save your /home files.

when i type startx i get : no startx installed
i have no problems with ls and similar commands.
No recollection of an improper shut down...
I am not worried about files that are on my system, just really dont want the hassle of reinstalling the os again...
If i cant prevent it, it would be nice...

Your X11 (X window system) is either corrupt or missing files. In that case it's going to be quite a job to track down the problem. A reinstall seems like the shortest path to fixing it.
