    wwhich installation do I choose

I'm a very newbie, so forgive me if this is a silly question.

When I'm looking for software to download, I'm often goiven a choice to download versions for Red Hat, Ubuntu, Debian etc. If there isn't a download for Suse, does that mean I can't run the software on my setup?

    Thanks,

    OS: Linux 2.6.18.2-34-default i686
    System: openSUSE 10.2 (i586)
    KDE: 3.5.5 "release 45.2"

I would say that you have a reasonably high chance of the program working as Red Hat, Suse etc are all very similar. Have you tried downloading software for Red Hat and running it on your distribution? That's one sure way to find out if it works or not

    All the best,

    Tim

In general they should work with Suse, BUT you may have problems installing or configuring. If possible try to find the software packaged for Suse it will make life easier.

What do you mean compile your own binaries? Are binaries platform independent?
