10.2 Software Update Error (new to linux)

An installation of 10.2, very stable, a few days ago unable to get any updates. The icon for the updates in the tray had a red 'x'. An error message referred to
(Note: ran zen-updater from shell to get the same error here in more detail, cut paste from error window)
System.NullReferenceException: A null value was found where an object instance was required.

    Server stack trace:
    at Novell.Zenworks.Zmd.Packaging.PackageManager.GetUp dates (Novell.Zenworks.Zmd.Catalog catalog) [0x00000]
    at Novell.Zenworks.Zmd.Packaging.PackageManager.GetUp dates () [0x00000]
    at Novell.Zenworks.Zmd.Packaging.RemotePackageMa

Logged in as root and tried the Yast update to see what happens. Any of the software management will read lists of packages, etc. then once selected, 'accepted' the GUI disappears.

To probably make matters worse I thought I'd install 10.3 Alpha. The update went well however the same problem with Zen (?) exists. During the setup, it had a dialog box about configuring a server (for the updates?) and when clicked 'details' no server listed.

    Shuttle XPC, Pentium 4 3.06 ghz x86_64 1g ram kernel 2.6.20-default

    Thanks for suggestions.
