strange audio problems in suse 10.1
hey everyone i am new to these forums ... and i come with a strange problem .... :
i am able to hear event noises etc. like nudges on kopete and system sounds like startup/ shutdown through my speakers but nothing else seems tp produce any sound like amarok limewire etc it was working fine until a few days ago and i cant fix it.. i have a sound blaster audigy LS and it was configured as snd-001(ithink) but now it has somehow changed to sndca-0106 and whenever i open yaST and press edit on the sound card it automatically closes it self .... any ideas anyone ??

try deleting the emu10k file from yast-> software management and then reboot and re-install it. emu10k is the driver for soundblaster soundcards!

A common technique to delete one's audio setup (to try again) is to go to /etc/modprobe.d, and rename any file with the ascii sequence "sound" in the file name, to some other file name.bak.
Then reboot, and run YaST > HARDWARE > SOUND and try to configure again.
Note with SuSE-10.2, SuSE users who have audigy cards (such as sound blaster) have often reported a permissions problem (where sound worked as root, but not as a regular user). In this case, the common fix is to use YaST to create an "audio" group (if not already created) and add regular users to the group.
Good luck.

You could try going to /etc/modprobe.d and rename any file in that directory, with the ascii sequence "sound" in the file name, to filename.bak (or something like that). Then reboot and try again to configure your sound via YAST > HARDWARE > SOUND and configure ....
Note, if that doesn't work, to progress any further, we will need detailed information on your motherboard, and also on the sound chip on your PC. And also any information on what you did the 1st time to get sound working.

Very odd
try your sounds as another user. If you only have one user account setup a new user and log out as the old user and log in as the new user. Let us know if you get sounds to play.
