7100gs stuck as VESA Framebuffer device

ive been having a few issues with my gfx card under suse 10.2

To start with the card was detected as an "unknown vga device" and sax2 had it detected as a Vesa Framebuffer device. After an evening of google + head scratching i found the update-pciids command which now has my card being detected correctly when i lspci.

so i then installed the nvidia drivers thinking that they would now detect the card but.. if i now run sax2 the card is still being detected as a Vesa framebuffer device and there is no option available to change it to any other driver.

i then ran a modprobe nvidia and got this back

FATAL: Error inserting nvidia (/lib/modules/2.6.18.2-34-default/updates/nvidia.ko): No such device

so i ran dmesg | grep NVRM

NVRM: The NVIDIA probe routine was not called for 1 device(s).
NVRM: This can occur when a driver such as rivafb, nvidiafb or
NVRM: rivatv was loaded and obtained ownership of the NVIDIA
    NVRM: device(s).
NVRM: Try unloading the rivafb, nvidiafb or rivatv kernel module
NVRM: (and/or reconfigure your kernel without rivafb/nvidiafb
NVRM: support), then try loading the NVIDIA kernel module again.
NVRM: No NVIDIA graphics adapter probed!

none of the 3 mentioned modules are showing with an lsmod | grep <name> so it must be something else but im out of ideas.

    can anybody out there help?

I have the same problem with onboard video on a machine I set up for a friend. It shows as a frambuffer device and allows no changes so it is stuck in 1280x1024. I need to drop the resolution to 640x480 to run VM dos at full screen res. I know odd but can't change anything about the video.

Maybe an edit of xorg.conf but the frambuffer stuff is throwing me
