Using the internet really slows down the whole pc
Hi!
I've recently installed SuSE 10.2 and everything works fine more or less but
whenever a program uses the internet, everything really slows down. you can see how SuSE builds up windows and everything and there's quite a delay when you type something of click somewhere. So basically, when I use internet, the computer turns useless unless I close the program that uses internet.
Some programs I can use a little while before my pc slows, but eventually all programs slow down my pc.
I configured SuSE so I've to manually start the internet connection by using ifup because when SuSE automatically starts the connection, the computer won't boot.
When the PC suddenly slows, I can see using top that suddenly a whole range of programs (seemingly random) use tons of resources (which explains the slowing)
I'm using a Pentium III 800Mz or something with an Ethernet controller (DECchip 21041 [Tulip Pass 3] (rev 11))
I didn't had this problem with SuSE 10.0
Please help

How abot posting some of the output from running top. Also if you have ipv6 enabled, try disabling it by editing your network interface, going to aadvanved options and disabling ipv6.

I've disabled IPv6 but no luck
These are the outputs op my top

At the first snapshot you see way too much resources being used when I tried to disable IPv6 (which made me think. maybe it isnt a program using internet what causes the problem rather a program using the interface eth1)
For reference, I included a snapshot of my top a few seconds after I killed yast.

*note during both snapshots I was using FF to view this site, but like I said some programs a can use a little while before this occurs (10-15 minutes max)

The output from top seems normal to me. Its really strange, but my suspicion is still on the IPV6 stuff so try the suggestion by swerdna.

Well, as far as I know I've disabled IPv6 completely now. I changed some values in Yast and sysconfig. Usually I use Opera for browsing. I couldn find something to disable IPv6 there.
But no luck
By the way, I don't use a firewall
Thanks for your effort though. I really dont get why this happens. Hope you can think of some solution.

Can anyone tell me if the problem could be the module de2104x (or something)?
During the update from SuSE 10.0 to 10.2 internet did work correctly
Please
Ideas?
Anyone?

XGL really eats up my entire pc
I've disabled it.
My pc isn't up for sort of things. It's ment to just to stroll along the internet. Wander a bit. Help me write some stuff for school. Collecting dust and life experience. That sort of thing.

if anyone cares i think i might have found the solution
my network card was sharing an irq with VIA686A (whatever it may be). Apparently, VIA686A is important and VIA686A doesn't like to share
So I changed the IRQ of my network card, but I still need to finetune the whole thing. Somewhere down the road I disabled ACPI and DMA for my hard disk.
Hoping to help someone in the future
You can see if you possibly have an IRQ conflict if two devices share the same IRQ in kinfocenter. However most PCI-devices should be able to share an IRQ. So remember, if its not broke, dont fix it
You can change IRQ in your BIOS and/or by adding 'options [devicedriver, in my case de2104x or something] irq=[newirq]' in modules.conf
