How to log in to openSuse 10.2 - Newbie needs assistance

I am a total newbie in the world of Linux who is needing some assistance.

I installed the retail boxed version of openSUSE 10.2 on my Dell laptop. My system's specs are: Dell Latitude C640, 1.8Ghz Intel P4M, 1GB RAM, 30GB hard drive (partitioned 15GB for openSUSE and 15GB for MS Windows).

The installation seemed to go OK (took a little longer than I thought) and at the end of the installation the system rebooted and took me to the K desktop which I had installed. Everything seemed to be working fine. I then shut down my laptop.

A few hours later, I booted my laptop again into openSUSE 10.2. However, instead of taking me to the K desktop it switched to text mode after completing the boot process (during the boot process my screen shows a blue background with a gecko logo towards the bottom with dots circling around the logo while the machine is booting).

Then, this line of text appeared:

linux-u4xq login: (so I entered my username here)

Then, this line of text appeared:

Password: (so I entered my password here)

    Then, the following text appeared:

Last login: Thu Mar 8 21:11:33 CST 2007 on tty1
    Have a lot of fun…
    linux-u4xq:~ #

What do I do from here? It looks like I have logged in but how do I get to the K desktop? And, is it possible to boot straight into a graphical environment without having this text screen appear each time I start openSUSE 10.2?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

    hi rdhart07,

    Welcome to LinuxForums.

execute 'startx' and post error message if any.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

    Hi devils_casper,

Thanks for the quick reply. I just booted my machine into openSUSE for the first time today and instead of doing what I described in my original post, it did actually take me straight to my K desktop (not sure what would have made a change just by being turned off overnight).

I tried various things for the past 30 minutes and everything now seems to be OK. If it goes back to booting in the text mode, I'll do as you suggested and: execute 'startx' and post error message if any back on this thread.

    Thanks, again.
