I get no sound from the installed media players. I am new to Linux, just installed SUSE . Amarok says its engine (xine) wont play mp3s, realplayer tells me another proggy is using it, and Kaffeine acts like its playin but no sound. I know my sound blaster card is enabled and recognized, from Yast. Someone Help me Please, Thanx.Last edited by oz; 03-11-2007 at 12:45 AM. Reason: split off from another thread

Please ask this question again and post the version (32 bit or 64 bit) and the type of sound card etc.

Actually it is the newest 10.2 32 Bit version, sound blaster audigy se sound card, I searched Creative, no luck, no drivers, firmware, etc. And since, I posted this, Ive discovered, I cant seem to play any saved media, Kaffeine says no codecs for mpg. I downloaded limewire, got it up and running and downloaded an mp3 to see if I could play it through the built in limewire player, still nothing. I dont know what other info you may need to assist

Ok mp3's and most other "popular" foramts are propratory and thus not distributed with a free OS. But that can be fixed

BTW you should be able to play OGG files fine since it is a free format iw no patents and has better quality and compression then mp3's.
BTWA Do you get other sounds ie the startup wave? Have you configured you sound card in Yast?

Thanks for the link, on my way there now to read and learn, hopefully, not familiar with OGG files, but Ii will find out about those as well. As far as system sounds go, Ive heard nothing, yes I have config, with Yast, sound blaster set as 0 (primary), AC97 (onboard) set as 1 the only time i have heard sound is while in the in the Yast control center-sounds--I click other at the bottom right and go to volume, the box pops up with a bunch of sliders and a test button. I get the test sound scheme loud and clear when I put the analog front slider all the way up, Its the only slider that has any affect.

Ok followed steps in liink , step by step and voila, , Visually, everything plays fine, I can "see" Amarok playing the mp3 and I can see Kaffeine playing mpg, still no sounds. rechecked all settings in YaST and all is as should be, far as I can tell, but no sound

Ok just a couple of simple checks
1) make sure the volume is turned up and is on. There should be a small speaker on the bar at the bottom of the screen (assuming you are running KDE)
Click it an press the mixer button.
If it is not there go to the menu multimedia mixers and start kmix be sure the master channel is on (green light above the slider) alos that the volume is at a resonable level ie not all the way down.
2) go to personal settings - sound and multimedia - sound system
be sure theat enable sound system is checked
goto personal settings - sound and multimedia - system notifications
test some sounds see if you year them.
Also since it is a sound blaster make sure that your user account is a member of the audio group.
try logging out then log in as root and see if sounds work there.

Should be somewhere in the menus I run 10.1 and 10.2 menus are new so I can't give exact instructions. It is the same place you set backgrounds colors etc.

suggestions ....
Please, if I may jump in this thread with a suggestion (and not offend for jumping in) ... typically when one hears sound under YaST, but not under one's Desktop Environment, it can be for a couple of reasons:

May I suggest you first remove the possibility that it is item-b. If running kde, go to kmixer and ensure it is not blocking the sound via mute, or via slider bars too low. Typically the PCM setting confuses some users. In the case of Gnome, I think it is alsamixer you need to check.
If that does not work, then may I suggest you address the possibility of item-a, and do this by adding your SuSE-10.2 users to the group "audio". I do note that a number of SoundBlaster users have reported that in SuSE-10.2 they had a permissions problem, that was solved by this group "audio" method.
Good luck.
