    RAID, Samba

I am happily running OpenSuSe 10.2 and I got to put some use to an old computer my Dad gave me. I'm using it as a CS 1.6 server right now.

    System Specs:

    • AMD 750mhz Processor
    • 512mb RAM
    • G400 Maxtor Dual-Head Video card

He also gave me 3x 40 GB Maxtor drives to go along with the 10 Gb that is already in the PC right now. He said that I need a RAID card to use them all in the one PC though. So I read up a little bit on this RAID thing and I think I want to do a RAID 0 but I want a recommendation from a Linux user to make sure it will work in my Computer. I plan to spend $10-$20 on the card.

Also, I am having a little trouble finding a program with a GUI to make an FTP server. I don't need a domain for an FTP site do I? (I am behind a router so I configured portforwarding for ports 20 and 21, and I am behind a firewall so I should make it a Passive FTP site right?

I can't get Samba working either. Could someone give me a link for a tut on how to do it in Suse 10.2?

I would appreciate any help with this.

From all reports it is better to use software RAID

    http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Software-RAID-HOWTO.html

And normally you can support up to 4 drives from most motherboard. Personally I'd junk the 10 gig intall the 3 40 gig and that leaves an IDE connector for a CD or DVD. Otherwise you will need an additional IDE control card.

It says in the guide to only use one IDE bus per drive. If the drives get slaved they will lose performance evidently. If I buy a card I will have two extra buses. Off the mobo I can use both IDE buses for DVD/IDE and IDE then use the card for the 2 other drives. I don't want to ditch the 10gig drive because I have a lot of stuff on there I need. Are you saying that my mobo (made in like 1999) should support all four drives without a loss in performance?

Should work an additional IDE channel or two should solve the problem.

Thanks for your help. Do you have any suggestions on what brand is good?
