Connect LAN and cable internet
Hi everyone!
Please help me with my problem - how can I connect both LAN and Internet
I have my SUSE linux 10.2 machine connected to cable modem with Internet (via USB)
and also I have connection from my motherboard's ethernet card to switch (my home LAN with Windows XP machines) via RJ-45
I have configured Samba and firewall - so I can see shares of my LAN and browse Internet BUT NOT AT THE SAME TIME!!!!
I must switch wired devices in KNetworkManager - so if I have Internet (eth1) I cannot connect to LAN and if I connect to eth0 - I can see LAN and no browsing Internet
How to resolve this problem? Please I switched to Linux only 2 weeks ago from Windows.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
- 03-17-2007 #2It's all so much simpler if you replace the switch with a router. The router is of course a firewall for the lan, a switch for the lan and a NAT router connecting all lan members independently to the internet. It's about as plug-and-play as you get in Linux.

hey! gurus of networking and linux!
So can I have both LAN and Internet connections with this setting?
I don't want to buy any hardware (router) more and I want my Suse computer as administrator of all inocming traffic. The only thing I can change: instead of USB I can plug my cable modem into new ethernet card (and I still need to buy it) .
Can anyone say me is it possible for browsing like this:
Internet - ethernet card (or USB) - SUSE 10.2 comp - ethernet card - switch - LAN
I'm not guru of networking so if you give even link to right article it would be great!
To swerdna: can you give me some link with good step-by-step tutorial on my problem.
Thanks

hi
Humm well i have my samba networked and got a router as well it makes everything very simple to just have a router or a modem which has a router built in then all you do is configure samba and you can have net and LAN both at the same time
Another way i can think of it is actually connect ur usb to your linux machine and then have your two machines connected with ethernet cable and in network settings in windows select the option of getting internet from another computer but i am not sure if it will ask you to turn on DHCP on your linux machine if the option is available. you can try that i will try that as well just for heck of it and see how it works out and add more to posts
but try that see if it works.

Problem is almost solved
Hey hey hey
Yestersay - I made smart thing - just turned off KNeworkManager - and problem gone!!!
Now I have both LAN and Internet
but not last problem of course. On my SUSe machine I have Proxy Squid and now everyone from others goes to Internet through this proxy.
But everyone can ping any ip from Internet (but not domain name) - without proxy (so IRC chat goes not through proxy - and I am loosing trafic.
I am guessing I should configure DHCP or DNS server and how?
My SUSE box - 192.168.0.1
My LAn windows comps - 192.168.0.2(3,4,...)
My proxy -192.168.0.1
My gateway to Internet 10.8.0.1
