Where is the most complete repository ?

I am running the boxed set of Suse 10.1 64 bit and am having a lot of trouble getting updates to run smoothly. At first it would take up to 4 hours to get the list of required updates. I have fixed that by getting rid of all the european repositories and now have only the Australian pacific mirror. The problem is that many of the packages such as Amorak and KDEBase make the automated process fall over with unhandled exceptions due to the repositorie not having the required package (at least I think that is what the errors are telling me).

Can anyone recommend a single or better repository?

    TIA

You need to have at least one repository that handles the propritary software bits. This is usually packman but there are others

    http://packman.iu-bremen.de/MIRRORS

Also the updater sometimes has a problem if there are a lot of updates at one time. So try unchecking those files that throw errors installing the rest then try the failed files again. This often resolves the problem.

Another possibility is to use the "smart" program.

    Go here: http://en.opensuse.org/Additional_Ya...e_Repositories
    And go from there.
Loads of repositories, its a good starting point.
    Have fun.

    Now I've killed Linux

I was encouraged by the responses I received here so I decided to pick one package and follow the dependancy errors to see if it could be fixed. I started with KDEBase which was complaining about problems with Qt. So I tried Qt which was complaining about problems with libpng12.so.0. I googled that, found the rpm and downloaded and installed it. Now when I reboot I get a blank screen though the mouse sometimes works (ie I have a cursor on a black background that moves around). Now what do I do ??

    Well....

Hard to tell exacly what you did. It seems you are getting RPM's randomly off the net. Unless you really know what your doing this is a bad idea. It is always better to let a package manager like Yast or smart do the grunt work.

That said, it looks like you blew something in KDE. Personly I think I'd reinstall rather then try to dig my self out.

Can you get to a console?? press ctrl-alt-F1

If so login as root and try typeing

    init 3

    then

    init 5

This will stop the GUI and may restart it. If it does not or gets you back where you started then it may show you some error that can be acted on.

    Good luck

    I give up

Well, no terminal available and when I went to repair the installation the DVD froze. I have had it with Linux. I have realised that after 10 years of battling I have never done anything useful with this OS, other than some shell programming for a CompSci subject a few years back. I also now have an iMac G5 upstairs with OS X, which I have come to think of as "Linux that works".

I have both OS X and Windoze versions of Latex tools, C++, Java, Perl and Python tools and libraries. After thinking about it over the last couple of days I have realised that it is only with these Operating systems that I have done actual work. Linux has only been for street cred and I'm too old for that now.

Thanks all for your help, best of luck with your OS of choice but it is no longer for me. I am going to buy Vista and let it overwrite the Bootloader.

    In appreciation.

I've been using Linux since 1998, and it works great for me. I put my 81-year old mother on Linux last Christmas (because she was having too many problems with Windows) and its been working absolutely great for her. She has had NO problems with Linux (contrary to her frustrations with Windows). If she wants to get work done on an OS, then Linux is the OS for her (and for me).

But Linux is not for everyone. Linux is incredibly powerful, and if you start messing with it, by applying updates, you either have to know what you are doing, or very precisely follow GOOD advice, and not experiment/try blindly. A little research goes a long ways in Linux. A lot of research goes even further.

Enjoy your time on Vista and Mac OS X.
