X window issue at the end of installation
Hi!
I'm installing OpenSuse 10.2 on an IBM Netvista A40 PC.
YAST2 only starts in text mode complaining that there is not enough (min 96Mb) memory or X server could not be started. This is not what bothers me though.
After the installation is complete and the system reboots the X windows environment starts up (I selected minimal graphical environment at install, ie. not KDE or Gnome), but I can only see the buttons no text on the windows so obviously I have no clue what am I prompted for.
I do not know what could cause this? Maybe an issue with the integrated video card? Any way to test it?
Also I can't log into linux on the text terminals as I didn't get to the point of entering root or user ids and passwords.
I'm clueless how to solve this.
Thanks....

How much memory does your system have?

There are 2 256Mb modules in the PC so 512Mb. I did not find any reference to video card memory size. (I was using Everest)

That should be plenty.
Have you tested the memory??
Do you have a vidio card or is it on board video? How much does the video steal from main memory? (Check in BIOS)

I have the same problem trying to install 10.2 on my IBM clone with 768 MB memory. Its not a memory problem. It seems like in some installations, the install does not complete.
In the usual installation, before reboot, you set up your video, network cards, and enter your root password. On yours (and mine) it never got to that point. I don't know why.
Its not a hardware problem because I just installed Fedora 6, but I like the graphical interface on SUSE better. Go figure. Now I'm stuck. If we both can't solve this problem, its back to Fedora 6.

old cd/dvd drives can cause this
I've seen this happen on old PCs that have old dvd/cddrives. They encounter an error on the Install program (because of the old drive) and the install aborts prematurely.
