knetworkmanager connects ok but no 'net

    Hi

I have just done a fresh install of opensuse 10.2 and have set up madwifi as driver for atheros based wireless card. The card works fine, lights come on etc. When in wireless hotspot, knetworkmanager identifies wireless newtorks and connects (so far so good).

For some reason, though, I cant get any software (konqueror, firefox, bittorrent client, rss reader) will access the internet. Firefox comes up with 'server not found'. Other software just wont connect. Cant even bring up login page on wireless networks. I have spent a couple of days trying various configurations through yast2 but nothing works. This error has occurred at two locations (uni and internet cafe), so oes not relate to the area I am in.

Does anyone know what might be causing this? I would be hugely grateful for any advice offered.

    Thankyou & best wishes

    Jim

    same problem

    Hi,

I have exactly the same problem. NetworkManager shows that I am connected to the internet using our wireless. However, no program connects to the internet.

Were you able to solve the problem?

    Thanks for any help,
    Sebastian

For both of you, I would ask, can you ping google?

First run ifconfig -a and see which has an IP.
Does wlan0 or wlan1 (wireless devices) or even does eth0 (LAN)

    then ping google with:
    ping -c 6 "www.google.com"

    then try:
    ping -c 6 "www.google.com" -I wlan1

wlan1 may differ if your IP is on another one. Perhaps ifconfig -a may even show you that you do not have an IP, also make sure that the wireless router does not have WEP or mac filtering.
