KDE keep crashing and returning to login screen.
In the last month kde/x-windows keep crashing, there's no error screen or anything, it just returns to the login screen as if i've pressed alt+ctrl+backspace. All running programs are of course killed instantly (that is - its not desktop lock or anything like that...).
Only problem is - that I dont press on anything, many times this happends when I'm not home...
apps that run in the background are *SOMETIMES* - amule, azureus, amarok, xine and the usual kde apps... sometimes all are running, sometimes only one or none.... sometimes this happends many hours of running, sometimes 10 minutes after I logon... I also have remote desktop enabled.
I'm running open suse 10.1 with all recent updates.
Has anyone encountered this problem ? its driving me crazy.
Thanks

Sounds like a possible memory problem to me. Test your memory. Also possible heating problem, are all your fans turning and all the air paths clear??

Well, i'd have to check, I do have a video card fan which is pretty noisy and possibly on the verge of death, but it is turning (turning and rising the dead while at it) ...
I'l open the case and check if it the card is heating up... but as I do not use any video task i dont see why it would overheat anyway... (i'll have more on it tomorrow after i check)
ay any case - wouldnt overheating vga card or memory problems crash linux all together (or at least reboot) rather then just returning to the login screen ?
thanks

Maybe yes maybe no. But memory problems can appear random There is a memory check function if you boot to the install disk. Try running it for a couple of hours.

Guess
My best newbie guess is to check your desktop setting so that its not logging you off when screensaver or make sure that its not a power saving funcion..like a suspend mode that doens't work.
Thats prob not the problem..of course.
Can you keep a log of the systems commands?? Maybe there is an overflow of sorts and it kicks you out.
Best advice a newbie has to offer.
Good luck.

thanks

First try creating a new user and run from the new account. See if that fixes the problem. If so you can move your improtant data from youtr old account and change the ownership. It might be a problem with some kde config file.

Thanks to everybody
Following the advice of gogalthorp i've decided if i'm gonna open a new user I might as well just upgrade to suse 10.2 already and I did (of course I didnt use the old user like what gogalthorp suggested...).
I've ran for a day without crash's ! which is great !
I hope every thing will continue to work (I'l keep you updated if the crash's return).
Thanks guys !
