Sound Not playing in Open SUSE 10.2

I have a Toshiba Laptop with windows vista and Open SUSE 10.2. Everything installed fine.
Avi files weren't playing on the system, neither was mp3. Then i installed some codecs and now it is working but there is no sound output from the system. I have turned up the volume and it is not mute. I have check alsamixer and it is not mute there either.
I am new to Open SUSE. What could be the problem ?
    Can someone help me ?

Go to Yast - Harware - Sound Select advanced and test the sound there.

    sound

Do you know whether or not your sound drivers are installed and working properly? Can you get any kind of sound to play at all?

To play MP3, you may need to install something like mpg321 to be able to read the format.

When you go to play the MP3 what happens? Does the player appear to be playing it, or does it just say that it doesn't recognize the format?

Do you get any sound at all from anything? start up sound? As noted by gogalthorp, do you get sound when you go to:
yast > hardware > sound > other > volume ?? and try the test?

As indirectly suggested by scottmorris, to get mp3 to play, it is typically best to install 3rd party packages (although realplayer should play mp3 out of the box). But first confirm you have sound from any source.

Also, sometimes Laptop's can be trickier to setup the sound. It can be useful to do an Internet search on the specific model of Laptop. What Toshiba Laptop version are you using?
