no sound output
hey guys,
i have the same problem.
i've just installed opensuse 10.2 on my Asus a6r-b002 laptop. everything works OK, except of the sound. i've installed all the codecs needed, and mp3 files are being played correctly, I can see it, but there's no sound output. I tried Yast>Hardware>Sound... Test. Silence all the time.
I really don't know what to do.
If this will help:
lsmod |grep ^snd
snd_atiixp 24204 0
snd_ac97_codec 95648 1 snd_atiixp
snd_ac97_bus 6400 1 snd_a c97_codec
snd_pcm 86916 2 snd_atiixp,snd_ac97_codec
snd_timer 27908 1 snd_pcm
snd 61188 4 snd_atiixp,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm,snd_timer
snd_page_alloc 14472 2 snd_atiixp,snd_pcm
Please help
Thank you in advance!

some suggestions
Well sound should work under Linux on this laptop. I noted this page:
http://linlap.com/tiki-index.php?page=Asus+A6R
You could try going to /etc/modprobe.d and rename in file in that directory that has "sound" in the file name to someothername.bak. Then reboot your laptop. Go to YAST > HARDWARE > SOUND and try again to reconfigure your sound card. Test it.
I assume you have the Novell/SuSE packaged "alsa" installed? If not, install it. If that is not working, then you could also go to packman and install a more recent version of alsa:
http://packman.links2linux.org/package/alsa
After every alsa install, you need to redo all the tests again.
I note some individuals get sound working by typing "alsaconf", but I've never had to do that myself, so I have no idea if it is useful.
Note, you need to ensure that kmixer (kde) and also alsamixer (gnome) are not blocking your sound.
For some sound cards (more typically sound blaster) you need to add your regular user to the group "audio" (or is it the group "sound" ?? my memory is failing me). But that addition is typically only very occasionally needed AFTER one gets sound working under YaST > Hardware > Sound.
