suse linux9.2 usename & password???
My daughter (
got a computer from a place the donates them to kids for free. It had suse linux 9.2 installed on it and they did not give us a disc. Anyway we were decorating my daughters room and put her computer in the garage for a couple of months, then brought it back in and my daughter does not remember her user name and passwword, is there any way to reset these? And how would we do this? Please advise, thank you

Welcome to the forums!

Here's a HowTo that gives instructions for resetting the root and user passwords:

If I remember correctly, Suse 9.2 uses GRUB, so you won't have to worry about LILO.
GRUB is the screen that should come up when you first boot the computer.oz

I agree that the instructions are pretty obtuse. What Lilio and grub are is the boot programs for Linux. Since you are using Suse Linux most likely you are using grub to boot. This is the first screen you see when starting the computer. FOllow th grub instruction not the Lilo. Basicly you need to get into single user mode. This will allow you to change the root password. Once you change it be sure you remember it!!! You will also need to change the user password and or add a new user. But first you must get the root password reset.

I guess it sounds to scary!! ANother thing I don't think the machine is shutting down either we have tocompletley unplug it so we don't hear it running. There's nothing on the monitor but we can still hear the fan. Would this have something to do with the crazy text that goes on and on befor it ask for userlogin/password? My daughter is 8 who knows what happened befor we brought it back in. Maybe it was never shut down right?? Come on somebody help us out here! Thanks so much,
Sincerely , Pamilee

when you switch on machine, does GRUB Menu appear? if it doesn't, press Esc Key.
GRUB Menu will appear after that, select SuSe title in Menu and press 1. press Enter key. SuSe will boot up in command line mode.
type 'passwd' at command prompt and assign new password.
reboot machine and enter Username 'root' and password that you have assigned in command line mode.
reset password of your daughter's account through User Management in Yast.It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

You might find it easier to start from scratch and either reinstall Suse, or just install another distro of your choice right over the current install.
