all FileSystems has a few pros and cons. i usually go with default FileSystem of distro. SuSe 10.2 is using ext3 as default and i suggest you to format disk in ext3 only.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

I generally use ext3. It's been heavily tested, it's fast enough, and it has never given me any issues.

    ext3 or ntfs

If you want a Linux specific format, then the ext3 suggestions are likely very good.

Ever since the ntfs-3g driver came out for read/write on NTFS, and I was successful in using it, I have always left my new external drives formatted as NTFS. That way my external drives are still compatible with friends/office PCs.

you have to create atleast one partition and format it in whatever FileSystem you like. you can't use 'raw' harddisk as it is. create one big partition occupying whole disk space.

    Oldcpu:

In the very near future you'll be able to have ext3 formatted externals and share with friends, Office, etc.
