Google 'intel 536ep'. The driver is on the intel website.

This was a big headache for me when i started using Linux. Linmodems are high maintenance anyway and the advice i got was to stay clear of them altogether and use a serial modem, which are hardware modems that do not require software drivers.

There are some drivers around for 536ep but the ones supplied by Intel were ( at least ) compiled using an older version of gcc and subsiquentely didn't work on linux distro's using newer versions of gcc. Some individuals have got them to work but they had to re-write sections of the code so unless you've got experience with writing device drivers buy a serial modem. it'll work straight out of the box....

Go for the rpm not the tar ball. That's what worked for me. If I remember rightly, however, the install instructions are in the tar ball to configure the modem once you've loaded the driver.

I think you need to do a symlink from the new modem to /dev/modem/. I can't remember what the new modem entry is called but you can look it up.
EDIT: sorry that should be the other way around.
