    Suse 10.2 locked me out!

Up to now it had been logging in automatically as a user and as a user it had been acceoting my password after my monitor went to sleep. This morning for the first time Suse presented itself demanding a user name and a password. I tried as a user first and rejected me. ( I know my user name and password quite well). Then I tried as root ( which I also know quite well) and it also rejected me. What can I do other than reinstall?

boot up in rescue mode and reset 'root' password.
in GRUB Menu, select SuSe title and press 1. press Enter key. SuSe will boot up in Command Line mode. execute 'passwd' command and assign new password.
reboot machine and check if SuSe accepts new 'root' password.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Thanks for the prompt reply. What is 'rescue mode'? How do I institute it?

I have a new problem now. I booted with the suse DVD and clicked on 'rescue mode', but it took me back to the program and a 'rescue login=', I typed passwd and after hitting Enter it recuested 'Password='. Well nothing I tried worked. I also went back and booted into suse in the hardrive and tried to enter a 'new session' with Failsafe and later with Terminal, but the program didn't respond to either request. What do I do now? I'm thinkig I'll have to reinstall which I hate. I have the hard drive full of stuff already. Please help!

I don't know what a GRUB menu is. All I get is a Blue screen with the request for a user name and password. Is that the GRUB menu? Where do I find 'title'?

Remember that when I boot up from the suse DVD and choose rescue mode, the program takes me back to the hard drive suse and the same old blue screen asking for username and password.

    ok, go here - http://www.thecodingstudio.com/opens...penSUSE%2010.2

the very first screenshot is the grub boot menu. notice the options that you get ? - "boot from hard disk" "installation" etc. If you look to the bottom of those option you will see "boot options".

do this - ensure that "boot from hard disk" is selected.
type " single" at "boot options."
    hit enter.

at this point you will be logged in as root, without the password. next enter the command "passwd". it will ask you to reset you root password.

    hope this helped.
