10.0 vs 10.2
I have SuSE-10.0, 10.1 and 10.2 running on different PCs at home.

a. SuSE-10.0 was the last SuSE version to include proprietary drivers. From 10.1 onward, one often has to go to the manufacturer's (or some hackers) web site to get drivers for hardware where there are no open drivers,
b. SuSE-10.0 was the last SuSE version to have a rock solid version of YaST Software Manager. From 10.1 onward, the software package management in SuSE was changed, and Novell/SuSE are still fixing the bugs.
c. SuSE-10.2 introduced a 3D desktop, which a lot of newbies like. However it is still debateably not as stable as many would like, and it requires more hefty processing than the nominal desktop.
d. SuSE-10.2 has newer application versions, newer libraries, etc ... than SuSE-10.0. However with a fair amount of work, one can update their SuSE-10.0 to have amost the same amount of new applications as 10.2.
e. SuSE-10.2 has a newer version of KDE that has a different look/feel that provided in SuSE-10.0/10.1. I like the look/feel of this newer KDE version.
Mainly, because of the newer libraries/applications, I prefer 10.2 over 10.0, but that is a subjective preference.

ntfs-3g
You should not have to update the kernel to get ntfs-3g running. Do a seach on this web site, on the SuSE forum, and there are a number of great threads on how to get ntfs-3g running.
