Linux 10, HDA (Intel) (nVidia-color screen)
Hello fellow members of this forum.
I found this using google. I reinstalled Windows yesterday (again) and simply had enough. So i took out my Suse Linux 10 i bought a while ago but never used and installed it. The following is my laptop hardware.
Intel Centrino 2GHz
2x1024MB DDR2-533 DC
256MB GeForceGo6800
2x80Gig Fujitsu SATA Drives (no raid array used)
17" 1440x900 Screen
DVD + - RW Writer from NEC (i upgraded that to the 7500)
I have XP Home, VISTA Home Premium and Linux 10 along with Transgaming
I mainly use it for communication, skype, surfing the web and playing Diablo 2 (yes, still going strong after 5 years). I wanted to buy an Apple but other hobbies eat more money
So here is what i did. I installed Linux 10 on the first 80gig SATA drive and accepted the standard partition table from the yast installer. The system finished installation and booted right on up. I then went to the www.nvidia.de website and downloaded the latest driver. I also installed the kernel source and the gcc compiler. I run the nVidia setup and it finished nicely. When i reboot i get the nvidia flash screen and it all seems to work exept for one thing.
1- I asume i am right that pressing "ctrl+alt+backshift" closes the X-Server? When i do this now with the new driver the screen goes to many different colors and distorts and the system hangs. Are there solutions for this?
Then i went on to download the High Definition Audio driver from www.realtek.com.tw and logged in as root and ran the ./install script. It took a while but everything was installed. I unmuted the outputs and i can hear music quite good but there is one problem
1- The volume is quite low, but when i raise it in the mixer the sound distorts horribly. Are there solutions for this?
And as a closing question, can someone tell me how i can playback AVI files on linux?
Sorry if my english is not that good, i am from Germany and thanks for any help.

Please disregard the question about the AVI playback software. I have learned how to use a different installer source and installed the VLC Player on my system. Wonderfully easy!

This is a little self bump. I would be glad to receive some help on my nVidia screen issue and my sound issue. If someone has any tips i will gladly try them.
Thank you

suggestions
"ctrl+alt+backshift" is not a normal way to close the X-server. It is more a "contingency" method to kill the server. Is there any particular reason why you want to use this, when there are less dramatic ways to close X?
