By default, openSUSE will only play mp3 with Real Player (as you have discovered). To get openSUSE playing mp3 with other applications, most KDE users will install xine packaged by Packman (this also works for Gnome users). Note the xine packaged by Novell/SuSE is crippled for mp3, so do NOT use that xine version. You can find the Packman packaged version of xine here:
    http://packman.links2linux.org/package/xine-lib

and a xine user interface here:
    http://packman.links2linux.org/package/xine-ui

Note you have to sort some dependencis (listed on the first xine URL I provided): libcaca, libtheora, alsa-patch-bay

Once lib-xine is installed, you can then select xine as a sound engine for various applications, such as kaffeine and amarok.

Reference xvid/divx, surf packman, and you can find rpms to help you:
    - w32codec-all - http://packman.links2linux.org/package/win32-codecs
    - divx - http://packman.links2linux.org/package/divx
    - divx4linux - http://packman.links2linux.org/package/divx4linux
    - xvid - http://packman.links2linux.org/package/xvid
    - xvid4conf - http://packman.links2linux.org/package/xvid4conf

Many of us use Smart (packaged by Guru) or other package management tools, to semi-automate the installation of the above.
