OK 32 bit or 64 bit OS?
Did you manually install Firefox or is it the default install form the CD/DVD??
Does your mail program work? FTP? other programs that might hit the Internet?

its a 32 bit os and in didn't install it manually , its a default install from the dvd!
i dont use a mail program sorry, but almost all others seem to be workin, YaSt update is working, konqurer is working. But i found out yesteday that even opera too is not working..i think only third party tools are not working , but tools which comes with the environment or by the system are working fine.. this is my first post in my life time and am very happy that i got a reply.. thanks..

This is very odd. I must admit I'm stumped.
Runnig in KDE or Gnome?
Does Firefox run? Or just not connect?
What kind of internet connection do you have? DSL-cable? Do you conect direct to modem or through a router? Is the connection eithernet or USB?
To be truthfull I don't think any of the above would cause a problem like you describe but the more information you can give the more likly some one will know an answer or the right question to ask.
You my try to re initialize Firefox
open a home console.
you should see a prompt like this
gogalthorp@linux1:~>
were you user name is where gogalthorp is and the name you gave you computer is where linux1 is
become root by typing
su
then the root password (note this will not echo to the screen)
then delete the hidden directory .mozilla by typing
rm -R .mozilla
the period as first charater make the file/directory a hidden file a not normally seen
rm is the remove command
the -R is to recursivly remove the directory
now start Firefox and it should rebuild the directory.
If that does not work I don't know what else to try.
Anyone else want to jump in?

Does your firefox have offline selected?
A rather obvious, and almost silly suggestion, but please make certain you don't have "OFFLINE" selected on your mozilla/firefox.
