Do some research on your printer. If a driver isn't in the list the printer probably uses the print engine from another printer and your system will often have the driver for that print engine.

eg Epson dx4000 uses the C66 print engine

If you use another driver text may print but photos will be a mess!

The driver for the C42UX does a fairly good job on the C45, not quite as good as the correct driver.
To get the correct C45 driver go to http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/and install Gutenprint 5.0 or the newest available version. With this the printer should work perfectly.

Read the instructions from the download page

    http://gutenprint.sourceforge.net/p_Download.php3

Users of other operating systems, such as Linux, Solaris, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, HP-UX, etc. should download the main package, named "gutenprint-5.0.0.tar.bz2". This is a "source tarball"; it contains the source code for the package and must be compiled to produce binary executables. The command to unpack this file is

    tar xjvf gutenprint-5.0.0.tar.bz2

On some systems, you may have to issue the following command:

    bunzip2 -c gutenprint-5.0.0.tar.bz2 | tar xvf -

This will create a subdirectory named gutenprint-5.0.0. You should read the files named README and NEWS in that subdirectory for further instructions.

Yes great how-to. But you also should always read the release notes in case there is something extra or different in the install. In most cases there won't be but it might save a lot of tharshing about.

    RTFM always

    try ubuntu

    Hi!

If you are a Linux newbie I really don't recommend using SUSE as your first choice to begin with. The same troubles you are having with your printer might arise installing drivers for many other peripherals. I have the Ubuntu Edgy version installed, and Ubuntu is made for human beings .

I have the same C45 printer and the driver will be detected immediately and it works just fine.

    Hope this helps,

    Joe
