Ati Graphics Do Not Work With Linux!

i noticed with the bios set during install that the oboard want even detected so i think thats good

Ok so the ati is the primary card for the console.

We want the system to see only that card so it is good that the onboard is not detected.

Let us know how it goes.

i tried sax2 -r -m 0=vesa and 1=vesa

for both i get: try to call sax2 -p and select a single device.

when i do sax2 -p i get intel on chip 1
and ati on chip 2

so i figure id try both

i did notice that on this new install with onboard off and plugged into the ati card. the xorg.conf file is pretty much empty. there is nothing about my monitor or either graphics card. i figure suse cant detect my graphics card so how could it see my monitor. makes sence. but how can i get it to detect my graphics card. i cant go through sax2, yast locks when i try to get into graphics and monitor( cause there are none).

what to do?

if the ati graphics arent gonna work. i guess i can live with it. but not 800x600. im new to linux and wanted to give it a shot. but something as simple as installing a graphics card.... i dont know, it only took me 2 mins. with windows!!! sorry to say it. probably no one will want to help me now!!!

A lot has been said in this topic and I am starting my replies from the top. Hopefully you will have had your problem fixed before I get around to whatever your problem is.

I am using a later hardware set. I have an MSI K9A Platinum motherboard with an ATi X1600 PCIe graphics card. Moreover, I have had 2 different graphics cards installed before I got around to the X1600. One of them was an nVidia based card and so I expect I had extra problems getting ATi installed because of the "damage" that the nVidia installation caused (neither driver is "regular").

First, I think you mentioned either in this topic or another one, that you had a Samsung monitor. Which one was it? I have a Samsung also and I can tell you that my own ("SyncMaster 710M", but not one of the variations that is in "xorg") was not supported by "xorg" at all. That is to say, there was no definition in Linux at the time I did my installation. "Xorg" has been updated, so there might be a definition for it now. But this is probably why it is not being "detected". I think I am using the generic "lcd" screen definition. Someday, I might get around to cobbling up a definition, but I am too busy right now.

Second, I have found that you only get 1 chance to set the resolution for the ATi driver -- when you are first setting it up. There does not seem to be any way to change it again later. So take the time to preview a few settings. I found that the 1024 * 768 worked reasonable well, and that is what I set it when I did my last installation.

Hopefully ATi will take the time to complete their driver someday.

Hey man I have the same situation, except it's a compaq motherboard.

If you have a fresh install and don't care about 3d, you can use "sax2 -c 1" to tell it to use that one. That's as far as we got, and that works fine, it's jsut not the ATI driver. No 3D.

Did you ever get this working? I'd sure like to get this box up and running in 3d and widescreen. Let me know.

There is not such thing as "compaq motherboard". Compaq doesn't produce motherboards. They use the other vendors, like Asus for instance.

Now, trying to solve your problem byronsky, please provide more details about your system:

1) what's the motherboard exactly
2) what architecture it has (32bit or 64bit). Have you installed the right version of Suse for your architecture?
3) who's the vendor for your BIOS (just to clear also this: Dell doesn't produce BIOS software; Dell uses one of the existing vendors to produce BIOS for them, like American Megatrends, Phoenix and so on)? Also. what's the version of your BIOS? Maybe there is an update available that can solve a lot of problems.
4) In regards to your ATI drivers, have you installed the right drivers for your architecture (32bit or 64bit)?
