Question SuSE 9.3 syslog stopped operating

I recently installed SuSE 9.3 to start becoming more familiar with Linux. So far, very cool.

One problem I am having is that the Message log in /var/log has stopped working. I regularly would review the contents, watching all the scripts trying to access my ftp site (vsftpd), and would create new iptable entries to block them. I know, more fun than really functional.

Anyhow, a few days ago I noticed the message, boot and several other logs were empty and no longer updating so now I'm really confused. I started poking around and it seems that SuSE uses syslog for system logging so I checked the service in yast2 and tried to start the service, but I get an error that syslogd is not installed????

I'm really confused on what happened and how to get it working again. In the meantime, I configued vsftpd to log until I get the system logging properly like before.

Any help, suggestions, or pushes in the right direction would be appreaciated.

    Thanks,

    Dan

no one huh? I thought someone here could at least provide some info on how the default syslog worked in Suse. A little guidance would have been nice for a new Linux user on what could have happened or ow to restart the process. I'll look into other forums then.
