    Open SuSe 10.2 installation problem

I received a couple of DVD's in a magazine with Open SuSe 10.2. The installation DVD boots and loads the kernel and brings up the first page of installation. After that it gives a video mode error no matter what sort of installation I choose. There is an F3 function that is used apparently to change the video mode but it doesn't work. I have this problem with two different computers on which I tried to install it. One is a Pentium III system and the other a Pentium IV. Either machine installs and runs the Xandros distro without a problem. How do I go about installing it without the handy dandy installation program? Thanks.

    a possibility

Try holding down the "shift" key while you reboot to the installation DVD, and then choose a text install. Does that work?

No, that didn't work. The DVD booted normally with the same initial installation screen. I still get the video error.

Did you try the text install via F3 and choosing a text install (after holding down the shift key)? Also, can you be more specific as to the "video error" you receive?

Also try pressing <CTRL><ALT><F1>, <CTRL><ALT><F2>, <CTRL><ALT><F3> after the "video error" to see if you get any of those screens, and if they give any more information that you can pass on.

    On your PC, what:
    a. PC/motherboard do you have?
    b. graphics do you have have?
    c. what type of hard drive controller (also chipset) are you using?
    d. how much RAM does each PC have?
    e. what is the exact processor speed of each PC?

Edit: It is possible the DVD you have is simply corrupted.

I tried your suggestions. I think I may just be too much a beginner with Linux to handle it. One computer is an IBM Net Vista Pentium 3 with whatever options it includes. The other has an Asus main board with a Pentium 4. The video cards and monitors in both machines are quite capable of handling the default 1280X1024 resolution. I guess I will stay with Xandros. It installs and runs perfectly in either machine. I was just trying to get a feel for a different distro. I appreciate your efforts.

Question the installation menu comes but then goes blank

    hi all,
    i use suse 10.0 .
i wanted to upgrade to 10.2
    i used the cd installation.
    my machine is a p3 866mhz, 256MB pc133 ram, 32MB ATI VGA, VIA chipset MB .
when i booted using the first cd the installation menu screen came up without a hitch.
but when i press installation or any other menu, the screen goes blank(black) and there is no response from the machine.
i tryed all the options available including the text only installation, but the same dead response.
will be thankfull if anyone can solve the problem as i am a real suse fan.

Be sure the CDs are not corrupted. If you downloaded check the ISO check sum against the published value. When burning the CD use the lowest possible speed.

the installation menu comes but then goes blank

Hey hasala, I had a similar problem with suse 10.2 on my brother's laptop.
Try this: before selecting installation, (installation no acpi etc) try typing in "maxcpus=0" without the quotation marks. I tried this and everything worked perfect!!!
    Hope this helps
